A special recital marking the legendary baritone’s centenary, created and performed by two of today’s leading song exponents.

The recital is part of the two artists’ presence at this year’s Festival, which also includes coaching exciting emerging artists on Lieder and a special discussion of Fischer-Dieskau alongside experts from the Britten Archive on Tuesday afternoon.

Today sees a distinctive programme which makes a comprehensive study of the great baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau’s life and career through the music that he loved and is known for performing. It ranges from his childhood in Berlin (with music by his relatives Albert and Klaus) and experience of the Second World War (Wolf) to his marital life (C. Schumann), fatherhood, commissions (including Britten’s Songs and Proverbs of William Blake), teaching, and eventually his farewell from the stage (Weber) and then from the world.

A moving and heartfelt musical portrait of a dearly loved Festival star from two fine chamber musicians.
