In the heart of Newmarket’s community stands a venue filled with creativity, dedication and applause — the Kings Theatre. Proudly owned and operated by the Newmarket Operatic Musical and Dramatic Society (NOMADS), this much-loved theatre is far more than just a building. It is a thriving hub of entertainment, friendship and opportunity, run entirely by volunteers who are passionate about the performing arts.
Unlike many venues, the Kings Theatre is truly our own theatre. That ownership brings with it pride, personality and a genuine community spirit that audiences feel the moment they walk through the doors.
A Packed Programme All Year Round
The Kings Theatre boasts a full and varied calendar of shows every year, offering something to suit all tastes and ages.
At the centre of the programme are NOMADS’ own productions. Our talented members stage around six major productions annually, including:
- Three large-scale musicals featuring dynamic choreography, memorable songs and spectacular staging
- One traditional pantomime, packed with laughter, audience participation and festive fun
- Two engaging plays, ranging from classic drama to contemporary comedy
Alongside these headline productions, we also host a variety of concerts and special performances that showcase the wealth of local talent in the area.
In addition to our in-house productions, the Kings Theatre welcomes a number of visiting companies each year. We host outside amateur productions as well as professional touring groups, bringing diverse and exciting performances to our stage. This blend of local creativity and professional entertainment ensures a rich and varied programme throughout the year.
A Stage Built for Performance
The theatre features a well-proportioned stage, fully equipped with modern lighting and sound systems to support everything from intimate plays to full-scale musicals and concerts. Whether it’s dramatic spotlighting, atmospheric effects or powerful live music, the technical capabilities of the theatre allow productions to shine.
Comfortable seating and excellent sightlines create an enjoyable experience for audiences, while backstage facilities support performers and production teams alike.
A Community Hub
The Kings Theatre is more than a performance venue — it’s a welcoming social space.
Our coffee lounge provides a relaxed setting to meet friends before a show or during the interval, while our well-stocked bar ensures refreshments are always close at hand. The warm and friendly atmosphere makes every visit feel special.
We also host regular Open Mic Nights, offering a supportive platform for budding songwriters, poets, comedians and musicians. These evenings are a celebration of creativity, giving local performers the chance to share their talents in a professional theatre setting.
