Nicky Spence, Sean Shibe and Francesca Lauri: Songs for Peter
Nicky Spence, Sean Shibe and Francesca Lauri: Songs for Peter
“I was attracted, even in those early days, by his voice”. So wrote Britten in 1967, having been writing song cycles and operatic roles for Pears’ voice since 1940. Over these decades, and for another nine years, Pears would remain Britten’s most constant and valuable musical inspiration.
This recital features one of the most intriguing song cycles composed for Pears. Who Are These Children?, written in 1969, juxtaposes poignantly childlike songs with devastating responses to the horrors of war. Setting the Scots and English poetry of William Soutar, this cycle packs a powerful punch.
Alongside the music Britten composed for Pears, the two men were renowned performers of other composers’ music. Schubert was a particular favourite, and songs from his touching, elegiac Schwanengesang (or “swan-song”) open the recital.
Britten and Pears would often conclude a programme with some of Britten’s characterful folk song arrangements for voice and piano; at other times, Pears would be accompanied by guitarist Julian Bream. Here, guitar and piano alternate in a collection of favourites, including the tongue-twisting Oliver Cromwell, and lugubrious Foggy, foggy dew. There is a nod to Britten’s operas in the hauntingly beautiful Lute Song, from Gloriana.
The versatile and wonderfully talented tenor Nicky Spence is joined by two consummate musicians: Sean Shibe on guitar, and Francesca Lauri on piano.
Francesca Lauri is the Viola Tunnard Young Artist and alumna of the Britten Pears Young Artist Programme.
