Can you hear the alarm?

A visually striking, sonically charged reimagining of Bluebeard’s Castle, where sound, silence and danger collide.

Join us for Can You Hear The Alarm?, a sharing from a week-long residency at Britten Pears Arts. This new performance work reimagines Béla Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle for two performers, one Deaf, one hearing, using live electronics, gesture, image and written English to explore how sound and silence shape our understanding of danger, communication and story.

The performers give up their primary languages, spoken and signed, and rebuild the opera’s narrative through choreographic encounters, negotiation and visual storytelling. Incidental sounds from their movements are transformed into vibratory frequencies, shifting harmonies and intricate counterpoint, which are then translated into text captions. The result is a formally playful, aesthetically rich experience that asks what it means to live with or without sound, and how that affects our ability to perceive danger.
