Orpheus, grief-stricken musician and son of one of the immortal Muses, makes a deal with the Gods to rescue his dead love, Eurydice. But descending to the Underworld comes at a price – Orpheus must resist the temptation to look at Eurydice until they return to the surface, or risk an eternity without her.
Gluck’s opera stripped away the then fashionable musical ornamentation and instead showcases a radical musical simplicity – a story told through the power of the voice combined with profound theatricality.
